PERTH-based Memo Communications, a member of the Astib Group of companies, has been selected for a $15 million contract to design, engineer and install a Motorola digital two-way radio network as part of BHP Billiton’s Rapid Growth Project 5 (RGP5).
The network will provide a quantum leap in communications capabilities to BHP Billiton’s rail operations, with unprecedented levels of safety, voice clarity and data communications.
The P25 trunked digital two-way radio system delivers integrated voice and data over the rail network between Port Hedland and mine sites at Newman, Yandi and Area C.
The system includes the upgrade of digital repeater technology at 18 radio base station sites to provide communications for mobile and portable radios and control consoles for locomotives, vehicles and personnel working along this 426km railway in WA’s remote Pilbara.
The contract includes transition management from the legacy analogue two-way radio system, maintenance support plus technical and operator training for the critical communications network.
The iron ore rail system is one of the most technologically advanced and efficient in the world, with all train movements managed from a traffic control centre at Port Hedland.
Specialist computer railway signalling systems control train movements throughout the rail network.
A new purpose-built traffic control facility will include Motorola MCC7500 radio dispatch consoles to provide controllers with the latest integrated communications technology.
“As a Western Australian company, Memo Communications is proud to be awarded this highly significant communications contract.” Astib Group managing director Bob Sofoulis said.
“The contract will provide BHP Billiton not only with a state-of-the-art digital two-way radio system, but also the largest privately-owned Motorola system of its kind in the world. This contract shows Memo Communications’ commitment to becoming one of the leading system integrators in the Australian communications industry.”
As the local premier dealer for Motorola, Memo Communications will work closely with the system’s manufacturer to design, install and commission the network.
“Motorola is delighted to be providing state-of-the-art technology to BHP Billiton and the Pilbara operations,” Motorola Australia managing director Gary Starr said. “The P25 trunked network is a good fit for the RGP5 rail upgrade as it provides reliable, secure, clear and fast communications over a vast area, integrated in one solution. It is a world class network.”
